Interpretation of optic flows synchronized with observer’s hand movements

چکیده
We investigated whether the visual system could use a novel action-perception relationship mediated by a touch panel to resolve ambiguity in 2D optic flows. The stimulus was an optic flow produced by a dotted plane, which was translated and rotated in depth. The translation was synchronized with subject's hand movements on a touch panel. There were two perceptual interpretations of the stimulus as a surface patch oriented in 3D: (1) approaching it in depth and rotating away from gaze normal, or (2) not translating it in depth and rotating toward gaze normal around an axis perpendicular to that of Case 1 [Wexler, M., Lamouret, I., & Droulez, J. (2001a). The stationarity hypothesis: an allocentric criterion in visual perception. Vision Research, 41, 3023-3037]. Subjects reported the direction of the axis of rotation, which was perceptually coupled with the perception of translation in depth. The results indicate that the frequency of perception in Case 1 increased as the sessions progressed. This suggests that the visual system learned the association between hand movements and viewpoint translation during the experiment and used this association to decompose the optic flow.

The temporal representation of in-phase and anti-phase movements.
We have proposed that the stability of bimanual coordination is influenced by the complexity of the representation of the task goals. Here, we present two experiments to explore this hypothesis. First, we examined whether a temporal event structure is present in continuous movements by having participants vocalize while producing bimanual circling movements. Participants tended to vocalize once...
متن کاملWhere the Eye Looks, the Hand Follows Limb-Dependent Magnetic Misreaching in Optic Ataxia
The posterior parietal cortex (PPC) is thought to play an important role in the sensorimotor transformations associated with reaching movements. In humans, damage to the PPC, particularly bilateral lesions, leads to impairments of visually guided reaching movements (optic ataxia). Recent accounts of optic ataxia based upon electrophysiological recordings in monkeys have proposed that this disor...
متن کاملIdentifying the Position and the Role of Curator in the Formation Process of Contemporary Art Movements.
The curator, by changes that has seen from its traditional functions towards new models, is now an omnipresent figure in the art world and is closely related to how the arts are showcased. Accordingly, it can have a direct and effective impact on raising awareness about an artistic flow and how it is presented. By this reason, this study explores the relationship between the curator’s activity ...
متن کاملAssessment of Infant Movement With a Compact Wireless Accelerometer System
There is emerging data that patterns of motor activity early in neonatal life can predict impairments in neuromotor development. However, current techniques to monitor infant movement mainly rely on observer scoring, a technique limited by skill, fatigue, and inter-rater reliability. Consequently, we tested the use of a lightweight, wireless, accelerometer system that measures movement and can ...
متن کاملOcular responses to radial optic flow and single accelerated targets in humans
Self-movement in a structured environment induces retinal image motion called optic flow. Optic flow on one hand provides information about the direction of self-motion. On the other hand optic flow presents large field visual motion which will elicit eye movements for the purpose of image stabilization. We investigated oculomotor behavior in humans during the presentation of radial optic flow ...
